The Apple brand has been around for years – developing computers and software, as well as the ever popular iPod line, and had a dedicated following of fans who applauded Apple’s innovative ideas. Their first venture into mobile phones resulted in the unveiling of the first ever iPhone in 2007. The first iPhone was unveiled by Steve Jobs, CEO and co-founder of Apple back in 1976, at the Macworld Conference and Expo in 2007. The concept of the iPhone was not that it was not just a phone, but that it was an entire handheld computer as well as a phone, and the design was based on the popular iPod. The launch of the iPhone was touted as a new era of mobile phones and indeed prompted the launch of the ‘smartphones’; phones that didn’t just make calls but that were full of interactive features, with full touchscreens and mobile browsing. The main draw of the iPhone was that customers would just as easily be able to surf the web or send an email as they would send a text or make a phone call. Jobs claimed that the first iPhone was “literally five years’ ahead of any other mobile phone.” The device sold more than five million handsets and was a worldwide success and was even voted the Invention of the Year by Time magazine in 2007. In July 2008, the next generation of the iPhone was released – the iPhone 3G. The 3G version of the iPhone brought the huge success of third party applications, which eventually grew into the App Store and of course featured tri-band 3G accessibility. The 3G phone was sold out online before it had even reached the High Street and continued the success of its predecessor. The improved iPhone 3GS was released in June 2009 and has several new features to improve the performance including running a 600MHz CPU with 256MB RAM as well as improved graphics. The 3GS version also featured applications like cut, copy and paste, a higher resolution camera with video capabilities and auto focus, voice control, improved memory and support for HSDPA downloads up to 7.2Mbps. The 3GS version proved to be even more popular that the previous versions and plans for a further 4G version of the phone are currently in the works with a rough release date of June 2010. Stay tuned for more news as we get it.
